Confirmation, along with Baptism and the Eucharist, forms what the Church calls the Sacraments of Christian Initiation. These three sacraments work together to build a strong foundation for a full and active Catholic life.
While Baptism begins our life in Christ, Confirmation completes and strengthens it. Through the anointing with sacred chrism and the laying on of hands, we receive a special outpouring of the Holy Spirit. This gives us the grace to grow stronger in our faith, to live it out boldly, and to share it with others.
As the Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches: "By the sacrament of Confirmation, the baptized are more perfectly bound to the Church and are enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit. Hence they are, as true witnesses of Christ, more strictly obliged to spread and defend the faith by word and deed." (CCC 1285)
Confirmation for teens at st. frances of rome
We’re so glad you’re considering Confirmation—it’s the beautiful strengthening of our life with God and another step in becoming a member of the Catholic Church. Preparing for Confirmation is more than checking a box—it’s a time to grow closer to Jesus, understand what it means to live as a Catholic, and receive the strength of the Holy Spirit to live your faith boldly.
Whether you're seeking Confirmation for your child, or desiring it for yourself, we want to make the process clear and welcoming.
This page provides information for those seeking Confirmation for teens who are currently in, or are entering, high school (Grades 9th-12th).
If your child is not yet in high school but has received their First Holy Communion, they are not yet eligible to begin preparing for the sacrament of Confirmation in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. See our Ongoing Formation Ministries here at St. Frances of Rome for ways to continue growing in faith in the meantime.
If you are an adult seeking Confirmation, please explore our Adult Confirmation process.
Process overview
How Does the Teen Confirmation Process Work? At St. Frances of Rome, we walk with teens and their families through a meaningful preparation process that includes faith formation, prayer, service, and support from sponsors and the parish community.
We have adopted a hybrid model of small and large group sessions at church for both teens and their parents, and at home experiences for teens to do on their own or with their family.
This model meets teens where they are, allows for real sharing as teens engage with their peers, and allows for teens and their families to grow in faith together. Most importantly, this model reinforces what the Church has always taught - a child’s faith journey begins at home.
What are the Requirements for this Process? As a part of the process all teens and their families are asked to make the following commitments:
Attend Mass Weekly
Attend All Sessions at Church
Finish All Meetings at Home
Attend Retreats as Scheduled
Pray Together at Home
Be Active in our Parish Community
What Topics Do We Cover? The first year of formation introduces teens and parents to the person of Jesus, what it means to have a relationship with Him, and what we believe as Catholics.
The second year of formation helps teens and parents understand what the sacrament of Confirmation is and how it helps us to live as disciples of Jesus Christ.
When Do We Meet for At Church Sessions? Sessions are every three weeks beginning in September through May. Teens must attend all sessions. There are also select sessions where at least one parent or their sponsor must accompany them which will be indicated in the calendar. Sessions are on Wednesday evenings from 6:30pm to 8:00pm. Sessions for parents/sponsors will be bilingual.
