The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is a beautiful sacrament through which we experience Christ’s healing, strength, and presence during times of serious illness, suffering, or frailty. This sacrament is sometimes misunderstood because it was once known as Extreme Unction or the “Last Anointing,” leading many to believe it was only for those near death. However, the Church teaches that this sacrament is a source of hope, healing, and grace for those experiencing serious illness or the weakness of old age.
Through the ministry of the priest, Christ comes close to those who are suffering, offering peace, courage, and spiritual strength. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches:
“The special grace of the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick has as its effects: the uniting of the sick person to the passion of Christ… the strengthening, peace, and courage to endure in a Christian manner the sufferings of illness or old age… the forgiveness of sins… and the restoration of health, if it is conducive to the salvation of his soul.” (CCC 1520)
The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick reminds us that God does not abandon us in moments of suffering. Through this sacrament, the Church accompanies the sick with the healing presence of Christ, who strengthens us in body and spirit. Even when physical healing does not occur, God offers the grace to face suffering with hope, courage, and trust.
In this sacrament, the priest anoints the sick person with blessed oil and prays for God’s healing and grace. Through the priest, Jesus touches those who suffer, bringing forgiveness, comfort, and the strength of the Holy Spirit.
The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is not only for those at the moment of death. It may be received by those facing serious illness, preparing for major surgery, or experiencing the challenges of aging. If a person’s illness leads to death, the Church continues to accompany them by offering the Eucharist as Viaticum, meaning “food for the journey” into eternal life.
Ultimately, the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is a sacrament of life and hope. Through it, Christ reminds us that we are never alone in our suffering and that His love remains with us through every moment of our journey.
